Guía para el cuidado del jardín
How to Choose a Lawn Mower for Your Yard
Choose a lawn mower by the area you actually cut, the layout you navigate, and the way you want to power and store it. Start with those needs, then compare deck width, drive type, cutting options and the exact package contents. A bigger number on the box does not automatically make a mower a better fit.
Compare your options
| Your situation | Start by comparing | Check before buying |
|---|---|---|
| Tight gates and many planting beds | Maneuverability and deck width | Narrowest passage and storage access |
| Long, open mowing runs | Cutting width and drive assistance | Turning room and operator comfort |
| Already own cordless tools | Approved battery system | Exact battery and charger part numbers |
| Need several grass-disposal choices | Mulching, bagging and discharge | Which modes and attachments the model includes |
Map the lawn, not the entire property
A property measurement can include the house, driveway, patio and planting beds. For mower selection, identify the grass area and divide it into the sections you actually mow. Note gates, tree rings, tight corners and any separate areas that require lifting or transporting the machine. This gives you a more useful starting point than lot size alone.
Write down your narrowest access point before choosing a wider deck. A mower that reduces passes in the back yard may create extra handling work if it cannot reach that yard conveniently. Compare overall machine dimensions as well as cutting width; they describe different things.
Choose drive type and power source separately
Push versus self-propelled describes how a walk-behind mower moves. Gas versus cordless describes how it is powered. These are separate decisions. Consider how much pushing you want to do, how often you turn, and how comfortable you feel operating the controls. Drive assistance does not make an unsuitable slope safe; check the exact manual before choosing any mower for sloped ground.
For cordless models, plan the whole mowing session, including charging and any approved spare battery. For gas models, consider fuel handling and the engine maintenance schedule. Compare expected ownership routines as well as the initial purchase. Do not assume that every mower from one brand shares a battery or service procedure.
Read the package as carefully as the specifications
Two listings can describe a similar tool while including different accessories. Check whether the listing includes a battery and charger, a grass bag, a discharge attachment or other required items. If buying a bare tool, confirm that your existing battery and charger are specifically approved for that model.
Before ordering, save the model number and read the current US warranty, return and delivery information. Confirm where to find the operator manual and how to request help. This is particularly useful when a retailer bundle has a different model suffix from a product pictured elsewhere.
Frequently asked questions
What mower should I buy for a small yard?
Start with access, turning room, storage and the area of grass. A compact mower can be convenient, but there is no universal yard-size threshold that makes one model the correct choice.
Does a wider mower always save time?
A wider deck can reduce passes in open areas. Tight passages, obstacles and handling can offset that advantage, so compare the complete route.
Is self-propelled the same as cordless?
No. Self-propelled refers to drive assistance. Cordless refers to battery power. Check each specification separately.
Can I compare runtime claims directly?
Only when the battery, operating mode, grass conditions and test method are comparable. Ask for those conditions rather than treating every advertised runtime as equivalent.
